Staying Healthy on Set: A Guide for Video Producers

Next to constantly educating myself on different techniques and the technology of Video Production, this may the most important thing I do to keep myself set ready. I could probably write a novel about this and talk for pages and page but I promise you I will keep it brief with the important information. As a video production professional, staying in shape is crucial for maintaining energy, focus, and creativity on set. Long hours, tight deadlines, and physically demanding work can take a toll on your body and mind, making it important to prioritize your health. In this post, we want to explore the best ways that we have learned to stay physically fit and mentally sharp, from exercise routines to nutrition tips and stress management techniques.

Excercise

Regular exercise is key to staying in shape, especially for video production professionals who spend long hours on their feet. Growing up I always loved playing sports so knowing that I wanted to keep playing I knew I had to continue to tune my body and stay in shape. Throughout the years I have also found that training to be very beneficial for me on film sets. In a world where we film a lot of handheld and gimbal footage our body is a huge part of this process. Here are some exercise routines and stretches to help you stay in top physical condition:

  • Cardiovascular exercise: Whether it's running, basketball, or soccer, getting your heart rate up is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health.

  • Strength training: Building strength through weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, or resistance bands can improve your posture, reduce your risk of injury, and increase your overall physical resilience.

  • Stretching: Taking regular breaks to stretch can relieve tension and stress in your muscles, especially if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer or camera. Consider adding yoga or pilates to your routine for a low-impact, full-body workout.

A healthy diet is key to staying in shape and maintaining your energy levels throughout the day. We have found that this contributes more to 80% of your body success. If you are NOT living clean from the inside out then you may be wasting your time in some sense. Here are some tips for healthy eating on a busy production schedule: (You can also read the post I did on a healthy diet)

  • Plan ahead: Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance to avoid relying on fast food or vending machines on set.

  • Eat for energy: Focus on nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein to give you the sustained energy you need to get through long days.

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining focus and preventing dehydration, especially when working under hot lights or in challenging outdoor conditions.

Video production can be a high-stress environment, with tight deadlines, last-minute changes, and demanding clients. However, there are several techniques you can use to manage stress and stay calm and focused on set:

  • Breathing exercises: Taking deep, slow breaths can help calm your nervous system and reduce stress levels. Try inhaling deeply for four counts, holding for four counts, and exhaling for four counts.

  • Time management: Poor time management can lead to stress and overwhelm. Make a schedule and stick to it, allowing time for breaks and self-care.

  • Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help you stay present in the moment and reduce anxiety. Try meditating for a few minutes each day, or simply take a few deep breaths and focus on your surroundings.

Maintaining your mental health is just as important as your physical health, especially in a high-stress industry like video production. Here are some strategies for taking care of your mental health on set:

  • Prioritize self-care: Make time for hobbies, exercise, and relaxation outside of work to reduce stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

  • Seek support: Don't be afraid to ask for help if you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Talk to a friend, family member, or mental health professional if you need support.

  • Practice gratitude: Focusing on the positive aspects of your work and life can improve your mood and reduce stress. Take time each day to reflect on what you're grateful for.

Staying in shape for the rigors of video production life is essential for maintaining your physical and mental health, as well as your productivity and creativity on set. By incorporating exercise routines, healthy eating habits, stress management techniques, and mental health strategies into your daily routine, you can stay energized, focused, and fulfilled in your work.
